To Lawyers, Conviction of Harvard Chemist with China Ties Shouldn’t Chill Science. Researchers Aren’t So Sure

Bracewell’s Seth DuCharme discussed with STAT how Harvard University professor Charles Lieber being found guilty of lying to federal agents should not be seen as a threat to international research.

DuCharme said the verdict shouldn’t be perceived as “an escalating kind of hostility toward the academic or scientific community.” Instead, to him, it’s a kind of reminder that if you enter into those sorts of international research projects, there may be law enforcement and national security interests at play, and you need to be transparent.

A federal jury recently found Lieber guilty of lying to the government about receiving payments from a Chinese university and cheating on his taxes.
