Gene Elrod advises domestic and international energy companies on complex regulatory matters and related commercial issues. He represents owners of energy assets across the oil, natural gas and power sectors. His clients have included a diverse mix of oil and gas producers, pipelines, storage and local distribution companies, electric utilities and other participants in wholesale power markets, and large industrial consumers of electric power and natural gas.

Gene brings a sophisticated approach to regulatory matters based on his experience as a trial attorney at the Federal Power Commission (FERC’s predecessor), where he worked on gas pipeline and electric utility matters. In his private practice, he has represented clients in proceedings at FERC, in state courts, and before state regulatory commissions, Canada’s National Energy Board (now Canada Energy Regulator), and arbitral panels. He has also briefed and argued cases in federal and state appellate courts.

In addition, Gene regularly provides advice on regulatory issues arising in large-scale mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings and capital markets offerings. His clients have included publicly traded corporations, private equity firms and other energy-asset owners and investors.

Gene is ranked Band 1 in Energy: Oil & Gas (Regulatory & Litigation) in both Chambers Global and Chambers USA. According to commentators, “Eugene is a paragon of competence and top-notch lawyering” (Chambers USA, 2023) and “has deep institutional knowledge of FERC.” (Chambers USA, 2024).

Gene has an active pro bono practice. Collaborating with the National Veterans Legal Services Program’s “Lawyers Serving Warriors,” he has represented veterans of the US Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines in obtaining medical, retirement and other benefits.
