Virus Could Bite Into Environmental Enforcement: Ex-Officials

Jeff Holmstead was among the former government officials who spoke with The Washington Post about the potential impact of the coronavirus pandemic on environmental investigations and enforcement actions conducted by the US Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers. Over time, social distancing, self-isolation and quarantine measures are likely to slow down inspections, though agency officials stressed that their work continues, even if much of it is remote.

Holmstead added that the vast majority of inspections are done by state officials, not by the EPA. He served as the agency’s assistant administrator for air and radiation during the George W. Bush Administration.
