The National Law Journal Names John Klauberg M&A Trailblazer

New York (November 1, 2018) – The National Law Journal has named partner John G. Klauberg to its 2018 list of M&A and Antitrust Trailblazers. In a special supplement to the NLJ published today, Klauberg was recognized among an elite group of 27 lawyers who have “moved the needle” in M&A and antitrust law. The NLJ highlighted Klauberg’s work in connection with Great Plains Energy’s $14 billion combination with Westar Energy forming a new publicly traded company named Evergy.

Klauberg was instrumental in guiding Great Plains Energy through the complex deal. Initially, Great Plains announced that it would acquire Westar in May 2016 in a mostly cash deal. However, that proposed transaction was not approved by regulators in May 2017. The deal was then completely restructured as a tax-free, stock-for-stock merger under a tight timeline, and the transaction closed in June 2018. The deal was also a finalist as Strategic Deal of the Year at the 2017 S&P Platts Global Energy Awards.

Klauberg told the NLJ that energy is one of the most active areas for mergers and acquisitions noting that, in addition to strategic buyers, private equity firms and infrastructure funds have become very active in this space over the past few years, buying utilities, generation facilities and similar “utility type” assets. He foresees this trend continuing.
