Bracewell Attorneys Attend LeGaL’s 2015 Annual Dinner & Community Vision Awards

NEW YORK – The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York hosted LeGaL’s 2015 Annual Dinner & Community Vision Awards at the Capitale in New York on March 19, 2015. A number of Bracewell & Giuliani’s New York attorneys attended the dinner, which is one of the New York area’s largest gatherings of LGBT legal professionals and friends.

Associate Rebekah Scherr was one of those Bracewell attorneys on hand and gave her thoughts on the evening.

“The event was wonderfully put together and presented. It was like the Oscars’ night of LGBT activism, highlighting all the major contributions and achievements within the New York legal community and beyond,” said Rebekah. “The entire night was a success and it was a joy to see so many Bracewell attorneys spend their evening celebrating the successes of the LGBT Bar Association.”

LeGaL’s 2015 Community Vision Award recipients were Alphonso David – General Counsel to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Carmelyn P. Malalis – Chair & Commissioner of the New York City Commission on Human Rights, and Home Box Office – HBO. In Rebekah’s eyes, Alphonso David gave what was the most memorable speech of the night in accepting his award.

“He spoke of a community effort within a hospital one night where doctors, nurses, lawyers, and a priest, all joined together the day same-sex marriage became the law of the State, to marry a man and his partner who lay ill in the hospital. It was a beautiful call to action for all the various professions to work together, not only to achieve legal equality on a global and national scale, but to help individuals live their lives as they have always dreamed – as equals, as humans deserving of basic dignity and respect, able to experience the effects of legal equality.”

Held in March of each year, LeGaL’s Annual Dinner supports the charitable and educational activities of the LeGaL Foundation, as well as a host of additional activities benefiting the LGBT legal community and the public. At the Annual Dinner, LeGaL presents its Community Vision Awards to honor individuals or organizations with a distinguished record of service to the LGBT community, including a sustained commitment to achieving equal rights for all members of the community.
