Biggest Texas Cases of 2019

Bracewell’s Jeff Vaden, a former Harris County assistant district attorney and former assistant US attorney in the Southern District of Texas, discussed the sentencing of former Thirteenth Court of Appeals Justice Rodolfo “Rudy” Delgado as part of Michelle Casady’s Law360 review of the biggest cases in Texas for 2019.

Delgado began serving a 60-month prison term in September after US District Judge Alfred H. Bennett sentenced him for taking bribes in return for issuing favorable rulings.

Vaden said “in his experience Judge Bennett is a ‘moderate’ when it comes to sentencing, but the five-year sentence given to Delgado was ‘significant.’”

“It’s probably indicative of how we, in the legal profession, and particularly judges, would view corrupt conduct by another member of the bar,” Vaden said. “Judge Bennett, before he was a federal judge, he was a state district judge in Harris County … so maybe that struck a tone with him knowing he had held a similar position.”
