About Doug
Doug Stewart's experience spans a wide range of technologies, including computer hardware and software, consumer electronics, image processing and LED technology, data transmission and encryption, telematics, mechanical devices, and chemical and pharmaceutical compounds, among others.
A registered patent attorney, Doug's practice encompasses all aspects of intellectual property and technology litigation and counseling, including patents, trademarks, trade secrets, copyrights and domain names. He litigates patent and other intellectual property disputes in courts throughout the United States, including key patent jurisdictions such as the Western and Eastern Districts of Texas, the District of Delaware, and the Northern and Central Districts of California, with a particular emphasis on assisting international technology companies with U.S. patent issues. Doug also represents companies in Section 337 actions before the International Trade Commission, appeals to the Federal Circuit, and contested administrative proceedings before the PTAB and the TTAB. In addition, Doug represents and advises clients in connection with non-litigated IP issues, including licensing and IP strategy; patent portfolio and prosecution management; technology agreements; patent royalty audits; and related diligence issues.
A frequent lecturer on topics related to patent law and patent litigation, Doug was an adjunct professor at the University of Washington School of Law for ten years where he taught a patent litigation course in the Intellectual Property LLM program and participated in the Summer Institute hosted by the Center for Advanced Study and Research in Innovation Policy. Doug continues to guest lecture at UW on topics related to patent litigation.

Recent Notable Matters
Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. — secured voluntary dismissal with prejudice and without any payment after four-year litigation over patents related to self-encrypting solid state and hard disc drives
Toshiba America Business Solutions, Inc. — invalidated five patents related to facial recognition algorithms, digital marketing, and the capture and manipulation of digital images. Successfully argued and obtained affirmance of the judge’s order from the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals.
Big Fish Games — over the course of three hard-fought cases, invalidated 11 patents asserted by three different entities. Included two appeals to the Federal Circuit.
HTC Corporation — Obtained a complete victory for consumer electronics company HTC in a trademark infringement case in the Eastern District of Virginia on summary judgment days before trial was set to begin. Successfully argued and obtained affirmance of the judge’s order from the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Subsequently obtained a ruling entitling HTC to recover $1.5 million in fees based on the exceptional nature of the case.
