Bracewell Plays Host to Minority Opportunities in the Legal Profession Committee

On April 4, 2015, Bracewell & Giuliani LLP hosted a Houston Bar Association seminar for 1L law students through the Minority Opportunities in the Legal Profession Committee.

This event was part of the MOILP Committee’s 1L Summer Clerkship and Mentoring Program, which provides opportunities to qualified Houston-area minority law students to obtain positions with firms, companies, non-profits, and judges during their first summer. The focus of this seminar was to provide students advice and guidance on how to get the most out of their summer work experiences. The well-attended session featured Joseph Tung, a solo practitioner, who spoke on corporate transactional practice; Jim Lowe, from Proactive Interactions, gave advice on networking; and Robert DuBose, of Alexander, Dubose, Jefferson and Townsend, shared tips for improving legal writing.

In addition to hosting the seminar, Bracewell participates in the program by accepting applications and interviewing candidates, which it has done for the past two years.

The HBA’s MOILP Committee sponsors the area’s only summer clerkship program for 1L law students. The program provides mentoring and real work experiences for students who might not otherwise have the opportunity for a clerkship at a law firm, a corporate legal department, at a legal nonprofit or gain work experience as a judicial intern. Participating students also have the opportunity to attend seminars on professional writing, on getting the most out of internships, and on making the best impression on your employer.

As part of its overall goal, the MOILP Committee also encourages and promotes equal opportunities for, as well as active involvement and participation by, minority lawyers in the legal profession and in the Houston Bar Association.
