We trace our commitment to serving the public good to the firm’s founding over 75 years ago. Founder J.S. Bracewell enjoyed a reputation as a champion for the underdog, including the poor and disenfranchised. He famously remarked at a 1965 firm meeting: “A lawyer ought to be a leader in human affairs. He ought to regard himself as a servant of society, capable of making a substantial contribution to untangling the troublesome problems of our present day.”

These words continue to resonate among our lawyers and business professionals, as evident by our pro bono work and community involvement.

Pro Bono

Our lawyers collectively devote thousands of hours to pro bono projects each year. This work in recent years has included:

• helping secure passage of the LGBTQ-inclusive National Suicide Hotline Designation Act
• helping immigrants impacted by the Southern border crisis
• assisting the Houston federal judiciary in promoting and taking on cases related to the Pro Bono Work to Empower and Represent Act of 2018, or the Power Act
• serving as an Equal Access to Justice Champion with Houston Volunteer Lawyers

Community Engagement

Our lawyers and staff are also active in their local communities, volunteering time with over 150 different nonprofit organizations. In addition, our firm-wide Day of Service has been a Bracewell tradition since 2012, providing volunteer opportunities through service projects that honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Our outreach efforts have included service projects with such organizations as Buckner, Calvary Women’s Services, Central Texas Food Bank, Dallas After School, Harc, Houston Food Bank, Martha’s Table, The McKenna Center, North Texas Food Bank, San Antonio Food Bank, St. Paul’s Church of England School, Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, United Way – Houston and Xavier Mission.
